Birth Plan Guidance
‘The best a health care system can do is to equip itself to meet the needs of each individual woman and birth. Those needs run the gamut from undisturbed home birth to planned caesarean section’ Ina May Gaskin
Too often couples come away from their birthing experiences expressing their disappointment with phrases such as ‘oh well, next time...’ Or ‘if only they hadn’t...’
If you have a clear vision of what you want for your birthing day and want to come away feeling positive, empowered and like you wrote the script instead of looking on as though your birth was controlled by others, then compiling a birth plan is for you. This is how you are going to write that script.
A birth plan is not going into your birth with a tunnel visioned view of how your birthing will go. It is not a step by step plan of how you expect your birth to play out. Creating a birth plan is about the process. The process of empowerment through education, research, knowing your choices and options and opening the lines of communication with your birth team, it is as much about this process as it is about the birth outcome itself. In doing your research, you receive all the knowledge and understanding of how you want your birth to go and also accept that birth is unpredictable, but that in that unpredictability, there are ways that you can remain in control of each possible outcome, no matter what turn your birthing takes. If it means writing Plan A, B and C, the point is that you are writing the script. A positive birth is not reflected in how you birth, but in how that birth made you feel.
‘when writing the story of your life don’t let anyone else hold the pen.’ Jack Kerouac
I am excited to offer this service to the parents of Perth, encouraging them to navigate their birth journey by making informed, educated decisions and taking a proactive role as consumers. Because every pregnancy, every baby, every woman and every birth are different and the choices that you make that are right for your family deserve to be heard. Your empowerment will come knowing your decisions are based on reality not fear, that you are listened to with respect and your memories of this most amazing time will be warm and full of pride.
